West Highland Yachting Week - 30th July to 6th August 2010

Wednesday, July 28, 2010
Now in its 62nd year West Highland Yachting Week; the West Coasts second largest sailing event taking in 3 venues, Craobh, Oban and Tobermory. This year runs from Friday July 30th to Friday August 6th.
TUNNOCKS are back on board with West Highland Yachting Week, Scotland’s second largest yachting event that runs from July 30th to August 6th 2010. The famous biscuit makers have confirmed they will be supporting the Week for the 63rd running of this equally famous regatta. And Tobermory Single Malt Scotch Whisky is also to support the event this year as well as Argyll and Bute Council and the Crown Estate.
Caledonian MacBrayne hosts the popular Skippers Reception with West Coast Motors also helping out with transport during the week. The event is shaping up to give wider appeal this year for both spinnaker and white sail fleets with an extensive range of classes on offer.
Welcoming Tobermory Single Malt Scotsh Whisky as an additional sponsor WHYW Joint Regatta Committee chairman David Waltho said: ‘Whisky distilling and sailing go back centuries on the west coast and it’s really nice to have a good West Highland whisky brand in partnership with our unique West Highland event. It is also particularly appropriate to have Tobermory Single Scotch Whisky aboard West Highland Yachting Week given Tobermory is one of our regatta’s most popular venues. We are looking forward to a close association between the brand and our regatta.’
Katherine Crisp, Tobermory Brand Manager commented: ‘We are delighted to be involved with such a respected event in the sailing calendar. There is a strong association between whisky and sailing, in particular with Tobermory whose history is steeped in stories of adventures at sea including the Spanish Galleon, whose treasure is reportedly still sitting at the bottom of the Bay. The distillery looks forward to welcoming both competitors and spectators to enjoy a dram or two.’
Tobermory Distillery is hosting an open day on Thursday when the fleet is in Tobermory.
Tunnocks
Boyd Tunnock, managing director of Tunnocks is an enthusiast and past
competitor at West Highland Yachting Week and the Joint Regatta Committee is
delighted to welcome back the support of the company for the event.
In addition West Coast Motors has confirmed they will be offering the same transport service between Dunstaffnage Marina and Oban. Colin Craig of WCM said they would operate the bus service to help facilitate the circulation of competitors between headline events and around Oban. The famous open-topped double decker will also have the Oban High School Pipe Band touring the town on Monday evening prior to the Skippers Reception.
More Classes
The Joint Regatta Committee has confirmed there will be separate CYCA and IRC racing in Classes 1 and 3 at the 2010 regatta.
Announcing the extended range of classes JRC secretary Julia Heap said there would be a Class 1a for CYCA handicaps 10.75 minutes and below and Class 1b for IRC handicaps 1.027 and above, both racing under Pennant 1.
Similarly Class 3a will have CYCA handicaps 11.0 to 13.75 minutes with Class 3b for IRC handicaps 1.026 and below.
This is being introduced after the success of the first IRC class brought in last year with feedback indicating the demand for more IRC divisions at this level of fleet racing.
Class 2 will remain a restricted sail class for CYCA handicaps 11.0 minutes and below with Class 4 restricted sail for CYCA handicaps 11.25 to 13.75 minutes. Class 5 is now for CYCA handicaps 14.0-15.25 minutes, Class 6 for restricted sail for CYCA 14.0-16.75 minutes and Class 7 is CYCA handicaps 15.75-19.0.
Class 8 sees the biggest division from CYCA 19.25 to 28.0 with Class 9 restricted sail from CYCA 17.0-28.0 minutes.
Julia added that in response to comments from the 2009 event the Joint Regatta Committee is tightening up on class switching and the Points Series scoring.
Apres Sail Programme
The après sail social programme for West Highland Yachting Week is shaping up well. An integral part of the event, WHYW has always provided a wide range of excellent entertainment after a hard day’s racing.
This year there will be plenty for competitors to unwind to starting with the opening blast at the Lord of the Isles at Craobh Marina. On top of a wide selection of food available all day and to suit all tastes there will be dancing to a top local band on both the Friday and Saturday evenings. The oyster, champagne and seafood bar is back by popular request with special WHYW dinners in the restaurant in the evening. Add to this the skirl of the pipes from the Mid Argyll Pipe Band and fireworks to round the night off and Craobh is again set for a spectacular launch for the start of WHYW. The music continues on Sunday with the Skipinish Ceilidh House providing the entertainment after the first feeder race at Oban Marina, followed by great entertainment at the Wide Mouthed Frog at Dunstaffnage Marina, The Ceilidh House in Oban and the usual top spots in Tobermory right through to the final headline prize-giving ceilidh in Oban at the Corran Halls which will again be with Craigendarloch.
The Tag Rugby competition, Oban Sailing Club Barbecue, swimming and cinema nights are already in place giving a choice of activities for all the family during the week.
The prize-giving for the feeder races will be held at the Skipper’s Reception hosted by Caledonian MacBrayne at the ferry terminal in Oban with the mid-week prize-giving in Tobermory hosted by Tobermory Distillery which will follow the Open Day on Thursday. The final night’s prize-giving will be in the Corran Halls in Oban prior to the ceilidh dance.
